How Quilting Calculators works
- No login, no app. Every tool runs in your browser. Open a page, type your numbers and read the answer.
- Saves on your device. Your last inputs are kept in your browser's local storage, so a reload does not lose them. Nothing is sent to a server.
- Works offline. After the first visit the pages load without a connection, which helps in a sewing room with weak Wi-Fi.
- Inches and centimeters everywhere. Every length has an in/cm switch, and results show both.
- Formulas shown. Each answer comes with the formula and your numbers filled in, so you can check it.
Quilt math in a few lines
Most quilt math comes down to three rules. Keep them in mind and the calculators will make sense.
- Backing = quilt size plus overage on every side, then enough fabric widths to cover it.
- Binding = the quilt's perimeter plus a little extra for corners and joins.
- Yardage = length of fabric in inches ÷ 36, rounded up to the next 1/8 yard.
The quick calculator above applies these rules with the usual defaults. Open a full tool when you want to change the overage, the fabric width or the strip size.
Yarn and thread tools
Crafters who knit, crochet or stitch can use the same site. Convert a crochet hook size from millimeters to letters, use the knitting needle size chart and gauge calculator, and compare weights on the yarn weight chart. The yarn weight page also has a yarn calculator for swapping one yarn for another by yardage. For counted work, the cross stitch calculator sizes your fabric, and the row counter keeps your place.
Frequently asked questions
What is a quilt calculator?
A quilt calculator turns quilt measurements into the numbers you need to buy and cut: backing yardage, batting size, binding length, or the yardage for a set of pieces. Ours runs in your browser, shows the formula behind each answer, and rounds up to the next eighth of a yard so you can order from the shop.
Which quilting calculators can I use here?
You can use calculators for quilt backing, quilt sizes, fabric yardage and quilt binding. Each one works in inches and centimeters, shows its formula, and saves your settings on your own device. Start with the quick calculator on this page to get backing, batting and binding for one quilt size, then open a full tool when you need more options.
Are there knitting and crochet calculators too?
Yes. The yarn and thread tools are crochet hooks, yarn weights, cross stitch fabric, knitting needles and a row counter. They convert hook and needle sizes, compare yarn weights, and turn a gauge swatch or a stitch count into a size. They work without an account and keep working offline after the first load, which suits a craft bag.
How much yarn do I need?
The yarn weight page has a substitution helper: multiply the balls your pattern calls for by the yards in each ball, then divide by the yards in your new ball and round up. It works for any pattern that lists balls and yardage. A full project estimator for a blanket is not part of the site yet.
Do I need an account, and where is my data stored?
No account is needed. Settings and counts are stored only in your browser, on your own device, using local storage, and nothing is sent to a server. That keeps your data private, but clearing site data or switching browsers removes it. Use Print or Save as PDF to keep a copy of a result.
About the numbers
Values on this site are standard references written in our own words. Brand sizes and labels vary, so check your tool, yarn label and pattern. See the note at the bottom of every page and the about page for how we check numbers.
