What this site is

We built the tools we wanted at the cutting table: a backing calculator that compares seam directions, a binding calculator, a yardage calculator for cut pieces, and charts for hooks, needles and yarn. Each page puts the tool first, then shows the formula, a worked example and the reference table.

The home page has a quick quilt calculator for backing, batting and binding from a single quilt size.

Why it works the way it does

• Free and private. There are no accounts, ads or trackers. Your last inputs stay in your browser. See the privacy page.
• Offline. After the first visit the pages and data are saved on your device.
• Checkable. Every answer shows its formula with your numbers filled in.

How formulas and values are checked

Formulas are simple arithmetic: panels, rows, strips, inches divided by 36, and rounding up to the next 1/8 yard. A set of automated tests runs every worked example in the page text against the same code the tools use, so a number on the page cannot drift from the calculator.

Craft facts such as hook sizes, needle sizes, yarn weight ranges, mattress sizes and fat quarter sizes are standard references. We compare them against published standards and independent sources, then write them in our own words and tables. Each chart shows when it was last reviewed. Makers differ, so treat charts as a guide and check the label on your own tools and materials.

Trademarks and independence

Quilting Calculators is an independent site. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any yarn, hook, needle or fabric brand, or by the Craft Yarn Council. We do not use brand names in our page addresses or artwork, and we do not sell products or link to shops.

There is no contact form and no account system. If you spot a number that looks wrong, check it against your own tool or label, since brand sizes vary.
