How to work out the right quilt size for a bed
- Measure the mattress width, length and thickness.
- Choose a drop for each side.
- Quilt width equals the mattress width plus two drops.
- Quilt length equals the mattress length plus one drop, plus 10 to 12 inches if you want a pillow tuck.
- Send the size to the backing calculator.
What drop and pillow tuck mean
Drop is how far the quilt hangs down past the edge of the mattress on each side. A small drop of 8 in just covers the edge. A drop near 20 in reaches toward the floor.
Pillow tuck is extra length at the head of the bed so the quilt can fold over the pillows. Most people add 10 to 12 in. Leave it off if you plan to use pillow shams on top.
A bigger drop uses more fabric, batting and backing. Once you have your size, send it to the quilt backing calculator.
Why sizes vary by maker
There is no single official standard. Quilt makers, pattern companies and bedding brands each choose their own sizes. Mattress depth also varies from bed to bed, so the same quilt can hang differently on two queen beds. Use the chart to get close, then measure your own bed.
Frequently asked questions
What are the standard sizes for quilts?
Typical finished sizes are about 36 by 52 inches for a crib, 50 by 65 for a lap or throw, 70 by 90 for a twin, 86 by 100 for a full, 90 by 108 for a queen and 108 by 108 for a king. Makers differ by several inches, so the chart shows ranges, and the calculator sizes a quilt to your own bed.
What size quilt is 60x80?
A 60 by 80 inch quilt, about 152 by 203 centimeters, is a large throw, or a short-drop cover for a twin bed. It is exactly the size of a queen mattress top, so on a queen bed it would cover the surface but not hang over the sides. Use the calculator to add a drop for the size you need.
What are queen size quilt dimensions?
Queen quilts are commonly about 90 by 108 inches (229 by 274 cm), with a range of roughly 88 to 94 inches wide and 100 to 108 inches long. A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches, so that size leaves a drop of about 15 inches per side. Choose a larger drop if you want the quilt to reach the floor.
What are king size quilt dimensions?
King quilts are commonly about 108 by 108 inches (274 by 274 cm), with a range of roughly 104 to 110 inches in each direction. A king mattress is 76 by 80 inches, so that leaves about 16 inches of drop on each side. Check the maker's size, because king and California king quilts are not the same shape.
How do I work out what size quilt to make for my bed?
Measure the mattress width, length and thickness, then choose a drop for each side. Quilt width is the mattress width plus two drops. Quilt length is the mattress length plus one drop, plus 10 to 12 inches more if you want to tuck under the pillows. The calculator on this page does the math in inches and centimeters.
Why do quilt size charts disagree?
There is no single official standard. Quilt makers, pattern companies and bedding brands each choose their own sizes, and mattress depth varies from bed to bed. A chart is a starting point. Measure your own mattress, pick the drop you like, and use the calculator to get a size that fits your bed.
